Do all Roads Lead to Eusebius: Antiquities 20.200
So, I have been conducting some research on the James 20.200 passage (which I am working on a paper about arguing it is inauthentic). One thing I decided to do (because I can't find anyone else who has done it) is trace all the different iterations of the "brother of Jesus, called Christ" ...

Re: Josephus, Antiquities 20.200: List's Take
τοῦ λεγομένου Χριστοῦ in the extant Ant . 20.200 is in Matthew 27:17 and 22 : as τὸν λεγόμενον Χριστόν (both in the mouth of Pilate ; see footnote 43 below) Matthew 1:16 : as ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός 1 John 4:25 : also as ὁ λεγόμενος Χριστός 1 which, in footnote 39, List notes is . a passage about Jesus...

Re: Josephus, Antiquities 20.200: List's Take
I personally think the phrase can be either confessional or distanced, depending on context. I also think that the entire idea that a Christian scribe would always go around using pious language when interpolating something is, actually, an invalid assumption. "Distanced" language, as Whea...

Re: Josephus, Antiquities 20.200: List's Take
(5) Whealey's previous contention that a Christian would not use "called Christ" for Jesus he refutes. Has this been pressed too far in the opposite direction? Some people now seem to be treating this phrase itself as confessional, not just something that a Christian "would use."...

Re: Josephus, Antiquities 20.200: List's Take
His argument is that the portion λεγομένου Χριστοῦ (called Christ) is quite probably a marginal note that was inserted into the passage at some later point, similar to Carrier, and that the James being mentioned is a brother of Joshua ben Damneus mentioned in 20.203, again similar to Carrier. (1) I...

Josephus, Antiquities 20.200: List's Take
A new paper just dropped from Nicholas List. The first portion of the letter argues that the Antiquities 20.200 passage mentioning "James the brother of Jesus, called Christ" is partly interpolated. His argument is that the portion λεγομένου Χριστοῦ (called Christ) is quite probably a marg...

Re: The Legend of James the Just and His Martyrdom
New paper just dropped: Nicholas List, "The Death of James the Just Revisited" Abstract: Based on the testimony of Josephus (Jewish Antiquities 20.197–203), most scholars place the death of James, the brother of Jesus in 62 c.e. This article breaks with this consensus, arguing that the ref...

(Reinach was not a professor. He was a curator at museums)
Also good luck with that withdrawal. No one is convinced here G.

Re: Any pre-325 CE writings where Jesus' historicity was doubted?
The 2 Peter 1 bit is with regard to specific miracles, like the transfiguration. Nothing in the text indications this is about the whole of Jesus' historicity. Similarly, the Trypho bit is about whether or not Jesus is the messiah, i.e., Jesus cannot be the Christ (thus, Christians have invented a ...

Re: Any pre-325 CE writings where Jesus' historicity was doubted?
Recognitiones 8.62 is not denying the historicity of Jesus. Neither is Trypho being noncommittal. Carrier just hasn't bothered reading the rest of the Dialogue evidently. Recognitions 8.62 in full reads: "And, therefore, since among these philosophers are things uncertain, we must come to the t...
