Re: who invented the name Jesus?

There is a church father who complains of people calling him Chrestos instead of Christos Chrestos has the meaning of 'the good' The father says people who do this are uneducated silly people Maybe someone here knows who said this because i've forgotten so i can't quote the actual words. sorry. Then...

Re: The peculiar case of the good treasure

I grew up on star trek original and hated the remakes went to see the 2009 movie with some friends with 0 expectations but it turned out to be pretty good in fact when the credits rolled it was like a quasi-mystical silence of seeing something great then exactly 30 seconds later the first moan and p...

Re: dating the birth stories?

One of the points raised to argue James must draw from Luke/Matthew is the mention of Zechariah I had a look at this and it seemed to fall apart spectacularly! The argument is both Luke and Matthew mention Zechariah's murder - well away from the birth narrative where he appears in James Thus if Luke...

Re: dating the birth stories?

Ben, Some of your objections could be answered Supposing that gospels were in circulation at the time of composition - but they lacked birth narratives Then, the jarring introduction of characters wouldn't be so unexpected. It was meant to fill in the gap The James infancy gospel pre-supposes famili...

Re: dating the birth stories?

there's no point in me putting lipstick on something that's already got makeup on! i already said i thought it might be the source and if i was forced to choose i'd say it was yeah for sure. Not sure how you're reading it the other way! I get that all the time. I annoy people. I annoy myself too. Gl...

Re: dating the birth stories?

Well, i'm very curious about the unique word 'full of grace' kecharitomene It's such a rare form almost never used anywhere else in Greek literature (it's the form not the word that's unique). I thought it might be possible to see if there's any other unusual words in James that would fit this style...

Re: dating the birth stories?

I'm surprised that this is not common knowledge - there must be (lame) arguments as to why this isn't the very source to it all? Apart from the typical Churchian dating game? I thought similar that this might be the source To seriously propose it would need some analysis of the Greek compared to NT...

Re: dating the birth stories?

Apart from that: Basilides is a gnostic. This means he has his own god, god the father, the original gnostic god. He is therefore absolutely not interested in church of rome-gospels about Jahweh. Nor is he interested in virgins. In the gnostic religion there is no virgin. The gnostic religion is sp...

Re: The origin of the belief in "resurrection of the SARX" prior to Marcion and Orthodox tradition

wild idea. could 'bones' have a certain insider meaning going back to Hebrew? the Hebrew word i find interesting. 'bone of my bones' and the alternative meaning of 'the same/very same' (yes for the word 'bone', strange - but that's what Luke is saying, it's the same person, the 'bone' person) So per...

Re: Did Papias exist?

some are altogether falsifications, and others, even if they do contain some true elements, nevertheless are not reported truly. τὰ μὲν ψεύδεται παντελῶς, τὰ δέ, εἰ καὶ ἀληθῆ τινα περιέχει, οὐδ᾽ οὕτως ἀληθῶς παραδίδοται. Συγκεκραμένα γὰρ τἀληθῆ τοῖς πλάσμασι παραχαράσσεται ὥστε, τοῦτο δὴ τὸ λεγόμεν...
