Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

I used to assume that Paul had written seven authentic letters: 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, 1 Thessalonians, Philippians, Romans and Philemon. But further research on this subject has convinced me that Philemon is rather part of the pseudepigraphy of Ephesians and Colossians. I don't h...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

Gday maryhelena, It is by stepping outside the story and allowing evidence based history to shine a light upon the story - rather than hoping ones interpretation of the story will shine light upon history - that has the potential to move along the search for early christian origins. Thanks, glad yo...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

Gday, Just as a worked example, what do you estimate about John the Baptist? I reckon the best evidence for him is secondary (Josephus Antiquities , their lives don't overlap), and the rest of the evidence coincides with the Jesus corpus (both men are mentioned in the same four books which focus on...

Re: Who existed ? When ? Where ?

Paul called Peter always "Cephas", in 1 Corinthians and Galatians. The two occurrences of "Peter" are in Gal 2:7-8. But, except for "on the contrary", these two verses are most likely an interpolation: see https://depts.drew.edu/jhc/Barnikol.html . Cordially, Bernard S...

Re: There was an apparent boom in Jesus stories after the first gospel?

Accepting a 2nd century dating for all of the Gospels is kind of tough, as the first Gospel, usually thought to be Mark, can possibly be as early as the 70's in the 1st century. The last Gospel, possibly Luke, may be as late as after the introduction of the Marcion canon somewhere in the 140's. Thi...

Re: New Fragment of Mark! Dated 1st century!

It was always possible to date gMark, and gMatthew, earlier than Antiquities and its dating of 93/94 c.e. The mention in both these gospels of Herodias being married to Philip establishes that. (The Herodias and Philip material in Slavonic Josephus supports the gMark and gMatthew account). Josephus...
