The 'It's All A Conspiracy!' Theory

What total b.s.

So which is it: delusion, or psychopathic lying? (There's no third option.)

Re: Temple in Jerusalem

So the Egyptian Jews knew (and favored the language of) a 'tabernacle of the tent of meeting'. A Temple substitute, presumably, or something very different? The Second Temple physically reappeared in Jerusalem 516 BC or 356 BC (depending on which sources you favor) - which is ignored in the Torah, f...

Re: Pearson's Point on 115-8 AD Key Date?

Neil- I think - mental note in passing, Pearson said smthg elsewhere much later regarding this - the point was first made in a PhD (1972 or '73?), which was then formally published*. Thereafter this bit got recycled (1990/2006); see p.147 (from a 1981 essay), for example: ...a process would most lik...

Re: 115 AD Alexandria

Have you read up on the rebellion in Egypt, Cyprus and Cyrene around 110 CE? The local pagans thought that the Jews were plotting to capture, cook and eat their flesh. Basically, almost all Judeans were expelled from those areas, and many were killed, including Jews who were Roman citizens. This fa...

Re: Simon from Cyrene

One imagines 'Simon from Cyrene' became an Early Christian and his 'sons' Alexandros and Rufus are 2nd generation Christians. This would be relevant in a North African Church, if we imagine he returned to Cyrene. Simon is Jewish, Alexandros is Greek and Rufus is Roman? What happened to the (two?) Ch...

Re: Levites as Egyptian Priests of the Great Serpent

This is an intriguing line of thought - that Levites (in Egypt) were priests of the Great Serpent in Egypt (c.800 BC?) See Scott Noegel, "The Egyptian Origin of the Ark of the Covenant" in Thomas E. Levy, Thomas Schneider, and William H.C. Propp (eds.), Israel's Exodus in Transdisciplinary...

Excellent Background on 1st C. BC Phoenician Theology

I am particularly interested in the Great Serpent cult at Alexandria and in the Delta also, among the coastal Semites. In Philo of Byblos, Thoth introduces Agathodaimon worship: this must have occurred long after animal worship began, but well before the OT stories c.300 BC. Any 'Judaic' involvement...

Can you unpack this?

The first verse of Homer's Iliad reads "Sing, O Goddess" (μηνιν αειδε θεα) and similar to Genesis 1:1 "the God created" (אלהים ברא). Thus one could say, "Who is Theos in the Greek Pantheon" because El and Theos are interchangeable. I'm not following what you mean. Can ...
