There is a question as to how far the 3rd century church (as distinct from the 4th century church) associated baptism with death burial and resurrection.
See for example my blog post http://hypotyposeis.org/weblog/2012/09/ ... hrist.html

Re: Jesus in the Talmud
I sent a few emails to Jacob Prasch to ask him more about what he is asserting in his article. Since he never actually quotes his sources, it is unclear what his sources actually say. I also asked him to clarify some of he stuff he said about Daniel-- he talks about the Yalkut-- I can't even find t...

Re: Early (Heretical) Markan Exegesis
The link between the teaching of Cerinthus and Mark seems stronger than in the other cases.

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
Since Ben has given up I'd love to hear from anyone else giving us an example of a shorter and longer version of a text in early Christianity where the longer text is acknowledged to be the most original. My bet is that we can't find one (i.e. we can't find an example of large sections being 'cut o...

Re: Genuine Paul vs .....
If Paul didn't normally write his own letters with his own hand, why is there such conjecture about stylistic differences between the "genuine" and "non-genuine" epistles? If Paul dictated his letters to a secretary then his style would come through just as much as if he wrote t...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
One issue I have is that IMO the liar and father of lies who is the Father of Jesus' Jewish opponents really has to be the Devil hO DIABOLOS the slanderer . It is what the name means. (DeConick argues that "father of lies" is a mistranslation.) Assuming FTSOA that she is right, I don't th...

Another point is that there is a distinction between a theology where the Father of the Devil has an identity and a ...

Re: 5 questions for those who accept Sinaiticus as 4th centu
IF the argument about the Shepherd of Hermas is that Simonides composed the text of Hermas in Sinaiticus on the basis of his access to Codex Athous then this seems highly unlikely on textual grounds. There are too many places where Sinaiticus has a better text of Hermas than Codex Athous. Just one ...

Re: The (Hegesippan?) list of Roman bishops.
It would seem that the notion of 'episcopal succession', & hence an 'episcopal structure', in the Christian church in the early to mid 2nd century, is either later embellishment, or a concept borrowed from a more established 'church' I think one has to distinguish. It is IMO highly unlikely tha...
