Re: 'Christ Born of Mary' Inscription, at Megiddo
They are referring to the first three letters of the inscription: ΧΜΓ , with a supralinear stroke. These three letters appear together like this in Byzantine Greek frequently. I can't tell from the photos whether the first letter (Χ) is clear enough or just predicted from the other two. Thanks for ...

https://www.heritagedaily.com/2024/01/1500-year-old-christ-born-of-mary-inscription-found-in-israel/150256 I can't see "Christ" or "Mary" there. Anyone an idea? Yeah, me neither. All I see is what looks like Mu Gama followed by TOV and OY on the next line. Poetic license maybe?

Re: Everybody knew what the nomina sacra were
So abbreviation became second nature. In our courts there developed shorthand. In our streets there is slant which in essence codifies messaging (a single word conveys a paragraph of explanation). Nomina sacra are like this. A codified method of abbreviation. Standardisation of these abbreviations ...

Re: Everybody knew what the nomina sacra were
I think we can't imagine a world where handwriting was the only way to communicate information over distance and time. Depends on your age. Travelling the world in the 70's involved sending and receiving handwritten letters through the "C/- post restaunt" in major cities. So abbreviation ...

Re: Everybody knew what the nomina sacra were
I kind of took Peter's comment about "might as well jerk off" as meaning "might as well beat around the bush <yes, pun intended> rather than achieve a goal." The idea is that jerking off is not as fulfilling as doing the deed for real. Of course, opinions on the validity of such...

Re: Making sense of the Pauline Epistles
Do you know the difference between Attic Greek and Koine Greek? (PS: who is SA?) No. I'm sorry but I don't. That's why I was careful to say "according to SA". SA is what we abbreviate Secret Alias's online name as. I go even further and address him as Esse, which is a Mexican slang term f...
