ChatGPT answers:

The term "decimate" originally referred to a practice in the Roman army, in which a unit that had exhibited cowardice or other forms of disobedience would be punished by executing one out of every ten soldiers. This practice was known as "decimation" because it involved reducing the unit by ten percent.

It is true that Hannibal inflicted significant losses on the Roman army during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), particularly in the early stages of the conflict. However, it is unlikely that these losses had a significant demographic impact on Rome as a whole. The Roman Republic had a large population, and was able to raise and train new armies relatively quickly. In addition, the Romans were able to draw on the resources of their allies and subject states to support their war effort.

It is worth noting that Rome did experience demographic problems in the late Republic and early Empire period, particularly as a result of civil wars, social unrest, and the spread of disease. These factors contributed to a decline in population growth and, in some cases, to actual population decline in certain regions. However, the impact of these factors on Roman demographics was a complex and multifaceted issue that cannot be attributed solely to the losses suffered during the Second Punic War.

Hannibal also faced "Invasion Fatigue". He was in Italy for 17 years and even the folks back home ceased with support and material.
Time is always the enemy of Invasions. Hannibal's was no exception.
