An Observation About Irenaeus's ἀλώπηξ
I am in a rush but as at least a few of you know Irenaeus juxtaposes the heretical Christ - a "fox" ἀλώπηξ - with Jesus in Book 1 (in the middle and end). Jesus as Irenaeus notes has the numerological equivalent of 888 (a fact he doesn't dismiss as irrelevant). But it is also worth noting that ἀλώπηξ has 888 in the middle of it. ἀλώπηξ = ἀλ + ώπη + ξ, ώ = 800 π = 80 η = 8. 888. Whether this was encouraged by Irenaeus is one thing. But known, it would seem, certainly but interestingly unsaid.
