Archeology - proof of syncretism

Post by dabber »

I wondered if the answers we are searching for don't lie in the Bible but maybe? underneath churches.

Examples:-

Under the Vatican, Tomb of Julii part of the Vatican Necropolis - late 3rd C mosaic, Jesus depicted as Helios with solar halo riding chariot just like Apollo.

Under the church of San Clemente in Rome, there is a temple of Mithra from Roman times. preserved almost intact, late 2nd C

Barberini Mithraeum in Rome. It’s located under the church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, the temple dates back to the 2nd C

The Castra Peregrinorum Mithraeum in Rome near the church of St. Stephano Rotondo. Around the second half of the 2nd century CE, one of these buildings was expanded and turned into a Mithraeum

Underneath the church of Santa Prisca. Trajan's town house until his death in 117 CE. One hundred years later, a member of the imperial family took over the building and built a Mithraeum in one part of the basement, while a Christian meeting place was established in the other section. Circa 400, the Christians took over the Mithraeum, destroyed it and built Santa Prisca on top of it.

Interesting, no? Has anyone here seen these places? Any other similar examples of note? Thanks

There's mithraea here in the UK, thinking of visiting ones here at Hadrians Wall and London this year.

Reuse of a site, by itself, does not provide "proof of syncretism."
Especially if the new construction destroys the old one, in which case one possibility is a decision to obliterate the former use; another, more neutral, possibility is simply to take advantage of a good real estate location.
