Lieu: Layers of Polemic in AM both Tertullian & His Sources

Post by Secret Alias »

Lieu using the same lines of argument I have present here time and time again (i.e. the parallel development of Against Marcion III and Against the Jews) his use of other Against Marcion texts from the second century concludes:
Thus, Against Marcion presents the reader with layers of polemic, both those of Tertullian himself and those of his sources; not only may his arguments not be his own, but even the views he credits to Marcion and his followers, especially when especially when these are easily overturned, may not be theirs but may be inventions by earlier detractors if not by Tertullian himself. https://books.google.com/books?id=aAK7B ... 22&f=false

Lieu's book on Marcion was published in 2015. A citation from another work of hers from 2003 might be useful:
Neither Judaism nor Christianism are found in Irenaeus or in Justin, two of Tertullian's principal sources (for Against Marcion), and they appear together only in Books IV and V of the Adv. Marc, which were written at the final stage of the work when Tertullian first had access to Marcion's Antitheses“) https://books.google.com/books?id=ZUWtA ... an&f=false
Lieu's point seems to be that Tertullian appropriated Marcion's use of the terms 'Judaism' and 'Christianism' when he finally got access to the Antitheses which formerly was only a hope on his part (i.e. in Book 1).

Hoffman notes that Irenaeus is the source of all information about Marcion:
In fact, however, only Hippolytus seems to have access to a source of information other than Irenaeus, and where he differs from Irenaeus he differs also from the doctrine taught by Marcion https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&h ... Marcion%22
