Paul's Fugue from Aretas' Damascus == Paul's fugue from the temple-prison (Acts 21)

  • "Aretas" in Hebrew is anagram of 'prison'.
  • "Damascus" in Hebrew is anagram of 'sanctuary'.

27 When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, 28 shouting, “Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.” 29 (They had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)

30 The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. 31 While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar.

(Acts 21:27-31)

Therefore, who has eyes to see, could read 1 Corinthians 11:32-33:

In Damascus the governor under King Aretas had the city of the Damascenes guarded in order to arrest me. But I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.

...as a cryptical reference to the same Paul's fugue from temple reported in Acts 21.

Such is the power of gematry.

Further evidence that 'Damascus' has to be read as 'Sanctuary'/'Temple' is the implicit midrash from Genesis 15:2:

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?”

Elizier of Damascus, Abraham's steward, is charged with seeking offspring outside the land of Israel. Same role of Paul.

Just as the divine plan for Abraham was to have his own offspring (and not of Elizier), hence, the abandon of Damascus for Israel,

...so Paul who abandons Damascus is really abandoning Israel for the gentiles.
