A pre-marcionite reason to introduce John as the Baptizer of Jesus

Post by Giuseppe »

The priest Eleazar enthroned Bar-Kokhba as Messiah.

John the Baptist was introduced as who enthroned, by his baptism, Jesus as Messiah.

He is the anti-Eleazar just as Jesus is the anti-Bar-Kokhba.

Hence, the first gospel was written when the news arrived from Judea about the actions of Bar-Kokhba, but not still the news of his coming defeat.
Marcion had to adopt the first gospel only after few years, enough to remove the Baptizer from it as disturbing figure for his de-ethnicized theology.
