In the TV series she narrated BBCs:The Bible's Buried Secrets , Francesca Stavrakopoulou says that the Garden of Eden was modeled after the 1st Temple/Persian/Babylonian temples and king's gardens. I wonder if the fourfold division you bring up is common in those.

The cross is represented as the tree of life from which flow the rivers of paradise.
