Good resources on Martyrdom of Isaiah?

Post by rgprice »

Neil's recent post about Roger's theory regarding Paul's potential use of Vision of Isaiah has re-highlighted the relevant of Martyrdom of Isaiah. Unfortunately, Martyrdom of Isaiah is a mess, with what seems to be several layers of revision over time. So, trying to actually utilize any parts of Martyrdom of Isaiah to build any kind of case about the origins of Christianity is problematic. Does anyone have recommendations for good analysis of Martyrdom of Isaiah that goes into the history of the documents, the layers of revision, meaning, etc.?

There is a thread that I created here a few years back that goes over the issues of what was in the different extant versions:

The extant versions, with an English translation of the Ethiopic. can be found in R.H. Roberts' The Ascension of Isaiah, published in 1900. His introduction goes over the history of the text and is very comprehensive. An on-line version exists here:

Isn't Norelli the main scholar on the Vision, Martyrdom and Ascension of Isaiah?
