Larry,
Not sure if you will find this helpful, but some while back I had looked up some original language (well, Greek at least) references to APOSTAUROW and a bit about the Latin cognates, as defined in Greek Dictionaries & Non-Christian sources.
Looking it over for the first time in years, I think this will be exactly what you were looking for.
This file was made while participating in a thread on BC&H that dealt with what the English word crucifixion implies as opposed to how it was used in antiquity. There are a few rhetorical questions posed to the original receiver of whatever post I was composing this stuff for, which had not been edited out as this was a draft copy of a post. Just take it for what it is, a sack of factoids about the subject.
Here is a search I did of my posts that mention APOSTAUROW (that is, the name of the file):
search.php?keywords=APOSTAUROW&terms=al ... mit=Search
Not sure if you can open it, but shows the subject was first broached in 2014, and then again in 2015 (the date of the file copy I attached), and again in 2018. Of course, I was not the only participant and many fine comments were made by quality contributors.

Crucifixion in the Ancient World?

Is this true? Is the term crucifixion (cruciatus) just a general term for punishment that has nothing whatsoever to do with crosses?
I really like how you are going Lane. It is a strong and solid road that is paved with literal text
