NOTES:

* denotes count made from index image
? denotes count made from English translation
--- or 0 denote that the tract is "Christless"

[1] These three tracts are related. Eugnostos ("Right Thinking"), the Blessed: NHC 3.3 --> NHC 5.1 --> NHC 3.4 "The Sophia of Jesus Christ" demonstrates a process of "Christianization" of a pagan letter.

[2] 15 occurrences of ⲭ̅ⲥ̅ get marked as scribal errors for ϫ̅ⲥ̅, yet ϫ̅ⲥ̅ occurs nowhere in the entire manuscript,

[3] Duplicate entries in index (See p.30)

It seems to be a dog's breakfast. Your summary article has much lamentation that appears quite justified. The final summary in "Nomina Sacra and the Nag Hammadi Library" by Frank T. Miosof, in the column headed "Christ", does not split the ligatures.

The small study of ⲭⲥ and ⲭⲣⲥ in the Gospel of Philip is almost complete. My finding seems to indicate that these two terms do not represent the same thing. When the context of these terms is outlined side by side there seems to be a consistent difference in the type and/or characteristics of the two different ligatures being translated with the One True Christ. Another 24 hours and I will summarise these findings.

You're on dude. I'll finish this list before I go to bed

EDIT: we might as well stop man. Holy shit. But let's sit it out ROFL

[FINAL]: I just finished, you should be awake by now cuz it's past midnight here.
I did the dirty work and included the IHS stuff as well, verified it all, and have taken a few extra screenshots

You can have fun now and do the statistics! Just do a rough one though I can tell you that IHS is early and XS is late, and the rest sits in between (with chrest and christ being odd ones out, obviously).
There will be excruciating fun details in the extent to which superlinears cover entire "words" but Thomas has lead the way there already too, and my Chapter 55 of the Commentary proves that as well: it all started with "crypto-words" with or without a superlinear, and then gradually one came to cover the entire crypto-word in the end

Anyway. Enjoy - this is about the greatest and most detailed and useful research ever done on the NHL. And an awful lot is yet to come!

By the way, (very) high praise for you Pete - you almost got everything perfect (and perhaps you did and I goofed up) which is basically impossible

The Apocryphon of John is one of a few that occurs more than once in a Codex - yet it is the only one for which the counts haven't been split. The Gospel of the Egyptians for example has its own counts for its own Codices and Tractates

I stuffed up the note [1] to the Apocryphon of John by confusing it with a separate note about the three tracts [1a] as follows:

[1a] These three tracts are related. Eugnostos ("Right Thinking"), the Blessed: NHC 3.3 --> NHC 5.1 --> NHC 3.4 "The Sophia of Jesus Christ" demonstrates a process of "Christianization" of a pagan letter.

[1b] Apocryphon of John -- this appears in three NHL tracts and one outside the NHL. i Codices II,1; III,1; and IV, 1 with BG 8502,2. This note was supposed to quote your earlier comment: "Check the index on page 20 of the Chrestian paper: BG is entirely XS, Codex III is entirely XRS, Codex II is a mix yet Codex IV contains nothing of either?! This is rather astounding if accurate and begs a thousand question on the basis that this tract represents perhaps the most attested tract of all non canonical texts - with 4 physical witnesses each probably dated to the mid 4th century.

What is exposed here - namely that BG is entirely XS, Codex III is entirely XRS, Codex II is a mix yet Codex IV contains nothing of either?! - is rather astounding. ATM I don't know what to make of it.

After I present (cupla hours I hope) the analysis of what I perceive to be contrasting characteristics of the XS and the XRS in the Gospel of Philip I will take a long look at the data your have assembled above for the rest of the NHL.

You have an opening double quotation mark, viz. "Check the index on page 20 of the Chrestian paper ...

Where is the closing one supposed to be?

You say, "...this tract represents perhaps the most attested tract of all non canonical texts..." - which tract are you referring to? Codex IV?

I am referring to the Apocryphon of John which appears as the first tract in three NHL codices ---- Codex 2, Codex 3 and Codex 4. And it also appears in the Berlin Codex.

There are four separate surviving manuscripts of "The Secret Book of John". One was purchased in Egypt in 1896 (the Berlin Codex) and three were found in the Nag Hammadi codices discovered in 1945. All date to the 4th century and are Coptic translations from Greek. Three appear to have been independently produced. Two of the four are similar enough that they probably were copied from a single source.[2]

Although the different versions of the texts have minor variants (the Berlin Codex has many minor differences with Nag Hammadi II and IV), all texts generally agree on the assertion that the main revealing entity was Jesus.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocryphon_of_John

It is highly unusual to have 4 copies of the same text from antiquity. It's presence in the NHL as the first tract in 3 separate codices indicates it must have been quite an important text.

1. This will do for the time being:
ApocryphonOfJohnLigaturesAcrossNHLCodices.jpg
ApocryphonOfJohnLigaturesAcrossNHLCodices.jpg (160.06 KiB) Viewed 1073 times
2. Pete, we must have the list and nothing but the list: no agenda, politics, steering or what not - everyone will turn this into their own elephant anyway

I'll split the remainder back into their own Codex and make a separate entry for Berolinensis - none of this is about the texts anyway

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Codex

And then of course we can compare the NHL to the void of the NT: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8881&p=140308#p139563

And we see that it is Luke and John who come up with the Chrism thing - so with a superficial glance it would seem that the whole Christian thing may have been authentic, and Chrestian?
Careful now - just a thought

We have to somehow understand what this XRISMA thing is. IDK - it appears to be related to oil but there appear to be many different uses over time. What does Perseus say? The term or related terms no doubt go back to the epoch BCE. Same with Chrestian.

Careful now - just a thought
John and Luke are probably just doing their usual borrowing.

BTW finished the summary - left it here:

The Apocryphon of John is one of a few that occurs more than once in a Codex - yet it is the only one for which the counts haven't been split. The Gospel of the Egyptians for example has its own counts for its own Codices and Tractates

It'd be interesting to categorise these as Sethian, Valentinian, etc.,
