"harmony gospel" split into four?

Post by StephenGoranson »

In several posts (search "harmony gospel") Pete (mm, lc) suggested a harmony gospel (more often called a gospel harmony)
may have been split into four. (By Constantine and co.)
Nevermind Irenaeus, Origen, etc.
Nevermind that a "harmony" suggests earlier sources.
Nevermind how (if possible) and why one might do that.
Special pleading?

As far as I know there is no settled and undisputed consensus (apart from the church industry of course) on the details of the history of the NT literature. So we are still examining whatever evidence we find on the table:

"Although a few Christian books may be as old as the 2nd century, none of them must be that old ... The drive to have older and older Christian manuscripts, however, shows no signs of abating".

Brent Nongbri; Epilogue p.269,
God's Library: The Archaeology of the Earliest Christian Manuscripts – August 21, 2018

Setting aside the "early" paleographic dating of "Early Christian" manuscripts found on the rubbish dumps of Oxyrhynchus, Dura Parchment 24 (from the mid 3rd century) edges its way to the top of the "Early Christian Evidence" charts. How may the existence of a harmony gospel be explained? Well there's two options.

1) Four accounts were harmonised to one.
2) One account was split into four "eye witnesses"

Nevermind Irenaeus, Origen, etc.
My provisional position on Irenaeus and Origin is set out here:

Maybe you can tell me the date of the earliest non-fragmentary Greek manuscript of Irenaeus?
Nevermind that a "harmony" suggests earlier sources. Nevermind how (if possible) and why one might do that. Special pleading?
Never mind the vast amounts of "Forgery in Christianity"

If we truly believe in the narratives carefully preserved by the church industry of the middle ages will we be saved ?
