The four editions of Tov's Textual Criticism of the Hebrew Bible have been recently analysed by Anthony Ferguson, with regard to changing group classifications and statistics, here:

There is no evolution discussed in the article, that is, who were the Essenes and why did they write the scrolls? Instead, it is about her role in translating the scrolls.

Commendable work nonetheless but this has little or nothing to do with the why of it all.
