Prophecy: Modern views v. what it really says

Post by A_Nony_Mouse »

Prophets are solemn people. They are few and far between. They had no honor in their own country. Such is the image promoted from the pulpit and from Hollywood.

1 Samuel 19:20: "And Saul sent messengers to capture David and when they saw the company of prophets in ecstatic frenzy with Samuel standing over them as appointed, the spirit of YHWH was upon them and they also prophesied in ecstatic frenzy ... Then finally he [Saul] also came to Ramah and when he came to Samuel and his band of prophets, he also became ecstatic and he stripped himself naked and prophesied before Samuel ... and lay down naked all day and all night ..."

Nothing dignified. A bunch of naked kooks jumping around and jabbering until they collapse from exhaustion. Gibbering holy rollers all. This is what a prophet of Yahoo is like. Not WAS like, IS like. Lets see the real thing portrayed in a Sunday School play. It certainly was not in that losing series about a modern version of Saul and David.

1 Kings 22:8, evidence of the survival and maybe even growth of Samuel's prophetic schools: "Then the king of Israel [Ahab] gathered the prophets together, about four hundred of them and asked them shall I go against Ramoth-Gilead?"

Four hundred? Were they unionized? Isn't one enough?

"Yea I say unto you, he is a prophet of the Lord!"
"How do you know?"
"Because even a demented lunatic wouldn't behave that strangely."

"Careful. If they arm their prophets we will be outnumbered."
The religion of the priests is not the religion of the people.
Priests are just people with skin in the game and an income to lose.
