"Chief Priests and Scribes" versus "Chief Priests and Elders"

Post by FollowerOfMessiah »

What are we to make of the two contrasting juxtapositions? Are there differences between Scribes and Elders? What can be made of the textual history of these differences?

"Chief priests and scribes (Grammateis)": Matt. 2.4, Matt. 21.15, Mk. 11.18, Mk. 11.27, Mk. 14.1, Lk. 19.47, Lk. 20.1, Lk. 20.19, Lk. 22.2, Lk. 22.66, Lk. 23.10.
"Chief priests and elders (Presbyteroi)": Matt. 21.23, Matt. 26.3, Matt. 27.1, Matt. 27.20, Mk. 15.1, Acts 4.23, Acts 25.15.
"Chief priests and Pharisees (Pharisaioi)": Matt. 21.45, Matt. 27.62, Jn. 7.32, Jn. 7.45, Jn. 11.47, Jn. 11.57.
"Chief priests and the whole (Synedrion)": Matt. 26.59, Mk. 14.55.
