Please don't quote answers from LLMs.
That's a good point.Secret Alias wrote: ↑Tue Sep 17, 2024 1:26 pm I want to make something clear which I haven't brought up before. I used to be one of those Marcion guys. You know "because Tertullian says X therefore that's a quote from the Marcionite gospel etc." The reason I stopped being this way is that it is impossible to distinguish between 3 kinds of citations:
1. citation of the Marcionite gospel by Justin
2. citations of gospel material by Justin against Marcion that wasn't from his gospel
3. citations of the Marcionite gospel by Irenaeus
4. citations of Luke by Irenaeus against Marcion
5. reuse of (1) by Irenaeus which were passed down to (10) or (13)
6. reuse of (2) by Irenaeus which were passed down to (10) or (13)
7. citations of the Marcionite gospel by Tertullian on his own
8. citations of Luke by Tertullian on his own
9. citations of another gospel by Tertullian on his own
10. citations of gospel material by Justin which were passed on to Irenaeus and picked up by Tertullian
11. citations of Irenaeus which were passed on by Tertullian
12. citations of the Marcionite gospel by Epiphanius from some other source other than (1) or (3)
13. Epiphanius's reuse of Irenaeus
