His substitution of the archaic meaning of a Hebrew name in a Greek text cannot possibly be described as 'exoteric.'

You need to know Hebrew to know that this name means whatever it means and that is esoteric knowledge.

I think Bretton's translation is more faithful to what the plain meaning of the Greek is. So it is more 'exoteric' than Carrier's subjective monstrosity.

Exoteric refers to knowledge that is outside, and independent from, a person's experience and can be ascertained by anyone (related to common sense). It is distinguished from internal esoteric knowledge.

and can be ascertained by anyone
And knowledge of the Hebrew etymology of names would properly be understood be exoteric to a Greek speaker?
