If Jesus was mythical - who was his ministry based on?
Are there any pre-cursors?

The Qumran prediction or expectation that God - a physical anthropomorphic being - would 'walk' the earth.

The survival of this anthropomorphic tradition is best known from the Bob Marley and the Wailer's song Get Up Stand Up (owing to Ethiopian influences).

Do you have a specific Qumran reference in mind?Secret Alias wrote:The Qumran prediction or expectation that God - a physical anthropomorphic being - would 'walk' the earth.

*If* Jesus was mythical (something I don't think), then he doesn't need to be based on anyone specific - could just be an amalgamation of common attributes a Jewish faith-healer/cult leader with divine qualities might be imagined to have.

Re: If Jesus was mythical - who was his ministry based on?
But god, in the mysteries of his understanding and in his glorious wisdom, has ordained a time for the end of deceit and in the appointed time of the visitation he will destroy it forever. Then truth, which has wallowed in the ways of wickedness during the dominion of falsehood until the appointed time of judgement, shall arise in the world forever.
Then God will refine in his truth all a man’s deeds, and will purify for himself a man’s body, consuming every spirit of deceit hidden in his flesh, and cleansing him with the holy spirit from all wicked deeds. And he will sprinkle upon him a spirit of truth, like holy water cleansing him from all abominations of deceit and impure habits, to make he who is upright perceive the knowledge of the most high and the wisdom of the sons of heaven, to show those whose way is perfect, for whom God has chosen an everlasting Covenant, that theirs is all the glory of Adam. And there shall be no deceit, to the shame of all works of lies.
At the visitation, for all who walk by the spirit of truth: healing and abundance of peace in length of days and fruitfulness; everlasting blessings and everlasting joy in a life without end; a crown of glory and raiment of majesty in everlasting light.
At the visitation, for all who walk by the spirit of deceit: abundance of afflictions by the destroying angels; everlasting damnation in the wrath of the vengeance of God and everlasting torment and everlasting destruction in disgrace and dishonour in the fire of dark places. And for all time their generations will be in sorrowful mourning and bitter misery, in disasters of Darkness until they are destroyed, with no remnant or any that escape. (1 QS 4)

There would be a number of potential candidates or pericopes. Vespasian's healing pericopes, for example.earlydude wrote:Are there any pre-cursors?
Possible contributions to the NT gospels are narratives about a real preacher dude (or two or more), though I'd say he (or they) would be more likely to have been 2nd century & outside Syria Palestina (probably Asia minor somewhere).

^^That Qumran quote screams out to me as proto-Christian

Nope there are none.earlydude wrote:Are there any pre-cursors?
That's the problem with said fallacy. There is to date no replacement hypothesis for the historicity in place.
Every last one has been effectively refuted in full, and opens more imaginative hurdles then addressing the historical hypothesis in place.
Basically it opens a can of worms where imagination takes over more so then what is historical.

So the idea of God visiting the earth at the end of times in the Qumran texts can't be seen a 'precursor' of the gospel narrative? Typical nonsense from you.
