Hello,

As the title says, I am looking for a reputable book on the history of Christianity, particularly regarding the differences between what Christ actually said and what those after him wrote.

I read a very interesting article that discussed the "hijacking" (my word) of the Christian religion by religious and political powers of the time. this is the aspect of the religion I am interested in. Has anyone read a good books that talks about this?

I'd recommend L. Michael White's "Scripting Jesus" and "From Jesus to Christianity" as a good general overview...

Thank you for these suggestions, they look spot on.

One aspect I forgot to mention in my question, and maybe one of these books touches on it, is how does the Gospel of Thomas affects this discussion. This probably opens up entirely different discussions on the authenticity of the Thomas Gospel. I really only know enough on these subjects to bee dangerous.
