Whoa! Have you UNDERSTOOD what you're reading? Please cite me where it says that when Mary is mentioned in the gospel it refers to the cult of John the Baptist? Bet you no such reference exists.

the suggestion appears in a short note of Couchoud's book and the reference is made to Lidzbarski (Das Johannesbuch, p. 131-143) for "Miriam"==Mandean sect.
What I don't understand is your opposition a priori to consider any possible suggestion, when it deals with Mandeans et similia.
