Mistranslation of 'Faith'

are there any common similar words for faith in Greek, Hebrew or Aramaic (or even Egyptian)

In Mark where Jesus feeds the 5000 and walks on water the clueless disciples are never rebuked for their lack of faith - why does Matthew say this but Mark doesn't?
It might be interesting to see what words 'faith' might get mistaken for and see if Mark's source might have used it but it got translated as something else
this is a long shot, just curious

Because Matthew follows Mark, and profits from the prepping that Mark has done.
It is hard work to pave the path; we can scold Mark for a miserably skinny Jesus, but he created him from scratch, and it honestly was a magnificent achievement. There is no one who doesn't believe that Mark describes a real person, someone who at least was rumoured to have done most of what Mark describes

The stress is on the faith, naturally, exactly because evertyhing is so incredible. You will find a lot of fixing to Mark in LukeMatthew.
Having said that, I thought it would be fun to look up the word 'faith', exactly because "good wine needs no bush": the more bush there is, the "badder" the wine. Stand back please LOL

[EDIT: there were a few "titles" that caused a superfluous entry - removed now]

'faith' in the Berean Literal Bible, NT only. I've left the footnote references intact

BOOK OF Romans
Chapter 1 Greeting the Saints in Rome
5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship unto obedience of faith among all the Gentiles on behalf of His name,
8 First indeed, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed in all the world.
12 and, that is, to be encouraged together among you through the faith among one another, both of you and of me.
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it has been written: “And the righteous will live by faith.”a God's Wrath against Sin
Chapter 3 God Remains Faithful
3 What if indeed some disbelieved? Will their unbelief nullify the faithfulness of God?
22 And the righteousness of God is through faith from Jesus Christ toward all those believing. For there is no distinction,
25 whom God set forth as a propitiation through faith in His blood, for a showing forth of His righteousness, because of the forbearance of the sins having taken place beforehand,
26 in the forbearance of God, for the showing forth of His righteousness in the present time, for Him to be just, and justifying the one of the faith of Jesus.
27 Where then is boasting? It has been excluded. Through what principle? That of works? No, but through the principle of faith.
28 Therefore we reckon a man to be justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
30 since indeed God is the One who will justify the circumcision by faith and the uncircumcision through the same faith.
31 Do we, then, nullify the Law through faith? Never may it be! Instead, we uphold Law.
Chapter 4 Abraham Justified by Faith
5 However, to the one not working, but believing on the One justifying the ungodly, his faith is reckoned for righteousness,
9 Is this blessing then on the circumcision, or also on the uncircumcision? For we are saying faith was credited to Abraham as righteousness.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith that he had while in the uncircumcision, for him to be father of all those believing while in uncircumcision, for the righteousness to be credited also to them,
12 and the father of circumcision to those not only of circumcision, but also to those walking in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham during uncircumcision. Abraham Receives the Promise
13 For the promise was to Abraham or his descendants that he should be heir of the world, not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if those of the Law are heirs, faith has been made void and the promise made of no effect.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, for the promise to be sure to all the seed, not only to that of the Law, but also to that of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us of all—
19 And not having become weak in the faith, he considered his body already having become dead, being about a hundred years old, and the lifelessness of Sarah’s womb.
20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief at the promise of God, but was strengthened in faith, having given glory to God,
Chapter 5 The Triumph of Faith
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we havea peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Chapter 9 Paul's Concern for the Jews
30 What then will we say? That Gentiles, not pursuing righteousness, have attained righteousness, and righteousness that is by faith;
32 Why? Because it was not by faith, but as by works. They stumbled over the stone of stumbling,
Chapter 10 The Word Brings Salvation
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your heart.”d That is, the word of faith which we proclaim,
17 So faith is from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Chapter 11 The Remnant of Israel
20 Rightly so: They were broken off by the unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be high minded, but be afraid.
Chapter 12 Living Sacrifices
3 For through the grace having been given to me, I say to everyone being among you, not to be high-minded above what it behooves you to think, but to think so as to be sober-minded, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
6 And we are having different gifts according to the grace having been given to us: if prophecy, according to the proportion of the faith;

16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by works of law, except through faith from Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith from Christ, and not by works of the Law, because by works of the Law not any flesh will be justified.
20 I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And that which I now live in the flesh, I live through faith from the Son of God, the One having loved me and having given up Himself for me.
Chapter 3 Faith and Belief
2 I wish only to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the Law or by hearing of faith?
5 Therefore, the One supplying to you the Spirit and working miracles among you, is it out of works of the Law, or out of hearing of faith?
7 Know then that those of faith, these are sons of Abraham.
8 And the Scripture, having foreseen that God justifies the Gentiles by faith, foretold the gospel to Abraham: “All the nations will be blessed in you.”b
9 So then, those of faith are blessed along with the believing Abraham. Christ Redeemed Us
14 so that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that through faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit. The Purpose of the Law
22 But the Scripture imprisoned all things under sin, so that by faith from Jesus Christ, the promise might be given to those believing.
23 Now before faith came, we were held in custody under the Law, having been locked up until the faith being about to be revealed,
24 so that the Law has become our trainer unto Christ, so that we might be justified by faith.
25 And faith having come, we are no longer under a trainer. Sons Through Faith in Christ

2 and we sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker of God in the gospel of Christ, in order to strengthen and to encourage you concerning your faith,

14 And the grace of our Lord surpassingly increased with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
19 holding faith and a good conscience, which some, having cast away, have caused a shipwreck concerning the faith,

13 For those having served well acquire a good standing for themselves and great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. The Mystery of Godliness
1 But the Spirit expressly states that in later times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
3 forbidding to marry, commanding to abstain from foods that God created for reception with thanksgiving by the faithful and those knowing the truth.
6 Laying before the brothers these things, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good teaching that you have closely followed.
12 Let no one despise your youth, but be a pattern for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
8 Now if anyone does not provide for the own, and especially his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
12 incurring judgment, because they have cast off the first faith.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils, which some, stretching after, have been seduced away from the faith and have pierced themselves with many sorrows. Fight the Good Fight

12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Lay hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and also did confess the good confession before many witnesses.
21 which some professing, have gone astray from the faith. Grace be with you all.

8 Now as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these oppose the truth, men being depraved in mind, disqualified regarding the faith.
10 But you have closely followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,

5 And indeed Moses was faithful as a servant in all His house,a unto a testimony of the things going to be spoken,
Chapter 4 The Sabbath Rest
2 And indeed we are those having had the gospel preached just as they did; but the message of their hearing did not profit them, not having been united with the faith of those having heard.
Chapter 6 A Call to Maturity
1 Therefore, having left the beginning teaching of the Christ, we should go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works,a and faith in God,
12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those inheriting the promises through faith and patience. God's Unchangeable Promise
Chapter 10 Christ's Perfect Sacrifice
22 we should draw near with a sincere heart, in full assurance of faith, our hearts having been sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our body having been washed with pure water.
23 We should hold fast to the confession of our hope, unwavering; for the One having promised is faithful.
38 But My righteous onef will live by faith; and if he might shrink back, My soul does not take pleasure in him.”g
39 But we are not of those drawing back to destruction, but of faith to the preserving of the soul.
Chapter 11 Faith and Assurance
1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not being seen.
3 By faith we understand the universe to have been formed by the word of God, so that the things being seen have not been made from the things being visible. The Faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he was testified to be righteous, God bearing witness to his gifts; and through it, having died, he still speaks.
5 By faith Enoch was translated not to see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him up.a For before the translation, he was commended to have pleased God.
6 And without faith, it is impossible to please Him. For it behooves the one drawing near to God to believe that He exists and that He becomes a rewarder to those earnestly seeking Him out.
7 By faith Noah, having been divinely instructed concerning the things not yet seen, having been moved with fear, prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is according to faith. The Faith of Abraham and Sarah
8 By faith Abraham, being called to go out into a place that he was going to receive for an inheritance, obeyed and went out, not knowing where he is going.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of the promise, as in a foreign country, having dwelt in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the joint-heirs of the same promise.
11 By faith also Sarah, herself barren, received power for the conception of seed, even beyond the opportune age, since she considered the One having promised faithful.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them from afar, and having embraced them, and having confessed that they are strangers and sojourners on the earth.
17 By faith Abraham, being tested, has offered up Isaac. Even the one having received the promises was offering up his only begotten son,
20 By faith also Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning the things coming.
21 By faith Jacob, dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph and worshiped on the top of his staff.
22 By faith Joseph, dying, made mention concerning the exodus of the sons of Israel and gave instructions concerning his bones. The Faith of Moses
23 By faith Moses, having been born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw the little child was beautiful, and they did not fear the edict of the king.
24 By faith Moses, having become grown, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
27 By faith he left Egypt, not having feared the anger of the king; for he persevered, as seeing the Invisible One.
28 By faith he has kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, so that the one destroying the firstborn would not touch them.
29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as through dry land, which the Egyptians, an attempt having made, were swallowed up. The Faith of Many
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, having been encircled for seven days.
31 By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those having disobeyed, having received the spies with peace.
33 who by faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises; shut the mouths of lions,
39 And these all, having been commended through the faith, did not receive the promise,

BOOK OF James
Chapter 1 Greetings from James
3 knowing that testing of your faith produces endurance.
6 But let him ask in faith, doubting nothing, for the one doubting is like a wave of the sea, being blown and being tossed by the wind.
Chapter 2 A Warning against Favoritism
1 My brothers, do not with partiality hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory.
5 Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He promised to those loving Him?
14 What is the profit, my brothers, if anyone says to have faith, but has no works? Is the faith able to save him?
17 So also, faith by itself if it has not works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.
20 But do you want to come to know, O foolish man, that faith apart from works is worthless?
22 You see that his faith was working with his works, and by his works, his faith was perfected.
24 You see that a man is justified by works, and not by faith alone.
26 For just as the body apart from spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
Chapter 5 Warning to the Rich
15 And the prayer of faith will save the one ailing, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he might be one having committed sins, it will be forgiven him.

7 so that the proven genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold, perishing though being refined by fire, may be discovered to result in praise and glory and honor in the revelation of Jesus Christ,
9 receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
21 who by Him believe in God, the one having raised Him up out from the dead and having given Him glory, so as for your faith and hope to be in God. The Word of the Lord Stands
19 Therefore also, those suffering according to the will of God, let them commit their souls to the faithful Creator in well-doing.
9 whom you should resist, firm in the faith, knowing the same sufferings to be accomplished in your brotherhood throughout the world. Benediction and Farewell
12 Through Silvanus,f the faithful brother as I regard him, I have written to you through few words, exhorting and testifying this to be the true grace of God, in which you stand.
BOOK OF 2 Peter
1 Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those having obtained a faith equally precious with ours, through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
5 Now also for this very reason, having brought in all earnestness, supplement into your faith virtue, and into virtue knowledge,
BOOK OF 1 John
9 If we should confess our sins, He is faithful and just, that He may forgive us our sins and might cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
4 For everyone having been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory having overcome the world: our faith.

13 I know where you dwell, where the throne of Satan is; and you hold fast to My name, and you have not denied My faith, even in the days of Antipas My witness, My faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
19 I know your works, and your love and faith and service and perseverance; and your latter works are greater than the first.

6 And he said to me, “These words are faithful and true. And the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent His angel to show His servants the things that must come to pass in quickness.”

Just looking at the list, Mark doesn't have an issue with faith, nor does John.
Quick verdict there could be that either is either very first, or very last

But Paul? ROFL - he's fighting, and fighting, and fighting. He either invented the "faith-trick" or he came after Mark (or John, for that matter)

Well, Paul seems to advocate two opposite things at once
on the one hand Christ is a realised reality in this life, on the other a thing of faith that can't be experienced until the next life
i tend to 'fade Paul' to a manageable level, he just seems to say the same thing over and over again or maybe my heart is just hardened!

I wonder if GMatthew was influenced by the idea of faith vs doubt found in James, and so he read GMark through that lens.
