A new series, different from the already existing 'In all of the NT' (search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keyw ... =titleonly)

These can be found via search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keyw ... =titleonly

IS and XS have been tweaked here, and this series will give you the literal Greek of the NT - not entirely, as there are many more nomina sacra, but it's a fun start. Take note: this bible translation is the least bad, yet not to be relied upon either. Always verify every single word for yourself!

Re: All in the Greek NT: Mary + mother + Magdalene

What do you reckon is the origin(al meaning) of the Mary/mother/Magdalene figure? (perhaps this is in your Thomas Commentary).

The three women and their NA28 variants, and Philip 36

Ah no, there's none of that in Thomas, only one single name that is mentioned twice: ⲙⲁⲣⲓϩⲁⲙ (Mariham), logion 21 and 114

I know Magdalene from Philip: https://metalogos.org/files/philip.html

Magdalene occurs twice, in logia 36 and 59 - and 36 is incredibly intriguing given the topic that triggered me to this specific search:

Philip 36 There were three Mariams who walked with the Lord at all times: his mother and [his] sister and (the) Magdaleneº—this one who is called his Companionº. Thus his (true) Mother and Sister and Mate¹ is (also called) ‘Mariam’.

Needless to say, this translation is a biased falsification. Let me translate what it really says:

Code: Select all

ⲛⲉ	ⲟⲩⲛ̅ ϣⲟⲙⲧⲉ	ⲙⲟⲟϣⲉ	ⲙⲛ̅	ⲡ	ϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ	ⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲛⲓⲙ	ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ	ⲧⲉϥ	ⲙⲁⲁⲩ	ⲁⲩⲱ	ⲧⲉⲥ	ⲥⲱⲛⲉ
are	there-be	three	walk	with	the	master	occasion	every	Mary	his(F)	mother	and	her(F)	sister

Code: Select all

ⲁⲩⲱ	ⲙⲁⲅⲇⲁⲗⲏⲛⲏ	ⲧⲁⲉⲓ ⲉⲧ ⲟⲩ	ⲙⲟⲩⲧⲉ	ⲉⲣⲟ	ⲥ	ϫⲉ	ⲧⲉϥ	ⲕⲟⲓⲛⲱⲛⲟⲥ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ	ⲅⲁⲣ	ⲧⲉ	ⲧⲉϥ	ⲥⲱⲛⲉ
and	Magdalene	this-one(F)	who/which	they	call	[dop]	she/r	:	his(F)	companion	Mary	Indeed	is(F)	his(F)	sister

Code: Select all

ⲁⲩⲱ	ⲧⲉϥ	ⲙⲁⲁⲩ	ⲧⲉ	ⲁⲩⲱ	ⲧⲉϥ	ϩⲱⲧⲣ ⲉⲧⲉ
and	his(F)	mother	is(F)	and	his(F)	joint-union	is(F)
It's funny how Philip basically is 80-20 already after only 30 hours of work, and I guesstimated it at some 200 hours total.
It will lead to the same "small in number yet enormously gigantic in significance" changes that the Thomas Translation brought forth, I think - but I'm tired of it all. Here's the uncorrected English for logion 36:

are there-be three walk with the master occasion every Mary his(F) mother and her(F) sister and Magdalene this-one(F) who/which they call [dop] she/r : his(F) companion Mary Indeed is(F) his(F) sister and his(F) mother is(F) and his(F) joint-union is(F)

Back on topic: this logion here is similar to yet different from what Mark has:

Μαρίαμ (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the) Ἰακώβου (of James) τοῦ (the) μικροῦ (least) καὶ (and) Ἰωσῆτος (of Joseph) μήτηρ (mother), καὶ (and) Σαλώμη (Salome)

1a) Μαρίαμ is what Bezae has, family 1, C (04), Washingtonensis / Freer, Koridethianus
1b) Μακαρία is what Regius has - yes

2) Joseph isn't a proper translation for Ἰωσῆτος, I think

Luke? Not named until 24:10

ἦσαν (It was) δὲ (now) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνὴ (Magdalene) Μαρία (Mary), καὶ (and) Ἰωάννα (Joanna), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the mother) Ἰακώβου (of James)

1) ἦσαν is omitted in Bezae, Washintonensis and another few
2) Μαρία ἡ Μαγδαληνὴ is what Bezae has, Latin and Coptic and then some

Matthew then? 27:56

ἐν (among) αἷς (whom) ἦν (was) Μαρίαμ (Mary) ἡ (-) Μαγδαληνή (Magdalene), καὶ (and) Μαρία (Mary) ἡ (the) τοῦ (-) Ἰακώβου (of James) καὶ (and) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) μήτηρ (mother), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) τῶν (of the) υἱῶν (sons) Ζεβεδαίου (of Zebedee).

1a) Μαρίαμ is what Bezae has, family 1, Sahidic, C (04), Regius, Koridethianus, Sangallensis - and that is most incredible as Matthew hardly has any variants in general, let alone one such as this: MARIHAM, the very Coptic word itself

But is this really so unique?

Matthew 13:55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem), and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
Matthew 27:61 Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting across from the tomb.
Matthew 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward daybreak of the first day of the week, Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.
Luke 1:27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin was Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem).
Luke 1:30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | voc sg fem), for you have found favor with God.
Luke 1:34 Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) said to the angel, “How will this be, since I have no sexual relationship with a man?”
Luke 1:38 So Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) said, “Behold, the maidservant of the Lord! Let it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:39 In those days Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) arose and went into the hill country with eagerness, to a town in Judah,
Luke 1:46 And Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,
Luke 1:56 Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) remained with her about three months and returned to her home.
Luke 2:5 to be registered with Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | dat sg fem), who was pledged in marriage to him, and who was expecting a child.
Luke 2:16 So they came in haste and found Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | acc sg fem) and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.
Luke 2:19 Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) remembered all that had been said, pondering them in her heart.
Luke 2:34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | acc sg fem) his mother, “Take note, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be opposed
Luke 10:39 She had a sister called Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem), who, after she had seated herself at the feet of the Lord, was listening to his teaching.
Luke 10:42 but only one thing is necessary. Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) has chosen the most important thing, which will not be taken away from her.”
John 11:2 It was this Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.
John 11:19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | acc sg fem) to console them in regard to their brother.
John 11:20 So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) remained in the house.
John 11:28 And when she had said this, she went back and spoke privately to her sister Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | acc sg fem), saying, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.”
John 11:31 When the Jews, who were with Mary in the house consoling her saw that she had gotten up quickly and gone out, they followed her, assuming that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
John 11:32 When Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
John 11:45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come with Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | acc sg fem) and seen what he had done, believed in him.
John 12:3 Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) took more than a pint of expensive perfume made of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
John 20:16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” (Mariam | Μαριάμ | voc sg fem) She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means “Teacher”).
John 20:18 Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | nom sg fem) Magdalene went and reported to the disciples, “I have seen the Master!” and she told them that he had said these things to her.
Acts 1:14 These all were devoting themselves with a single purpose to prayer, with the women and Mary (Mariam | Μαριάμ | dat sg fem), the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

(From Bill Mounce's, https://www.billmounce.com/greek-dictionary/mariam)

Look at it, just look at it - Luke and John betray their Coptic origins by the fistfuls, and it can't be coincidental that Matthew accidentally has a variant here, and indeed it says Mariam in all other places - and here's a quick Mariam scan in the Greek NT because we never should trust what we see until we have verified it ourselves and found the exact same:

Dunno why Berean doesn't have Luke 2;19 but there are plenty of variants there: https://biblehub.com/texts/luke/2-19.htm

But just tell me guys, and gals: it is obvious that I know nothing but why is it so clearly divided that Luke and John have Mariham and Mark and Matthew (and the rest of course) don't? Mark and Matthew use flagellein for the whipping of Jesus and only there alone, and everything else in the NT is "native Greek"

And why, oh why-ning why, does Matthew resort to writing Mariham here, in this very scene, 3 out of 8 times that he has the word? Is that mere copying from Mark? Let's see:

Matthew 1:16 is genitive yet family 13, ITA and Koridethianus have a quite different sentence and Mariham is in it.
- Matthew 1:18 is genitive, no variants
Matthew 1:20 is accusative, and says Mariham in a few dozen MSS: I wonder why NA doesn't default there
- Matthew 2:11 is genitive, no variants
Matthew 13:55 says Mariham (just ticking off the box there)
Matthew 27:56 says Mariham (just ticking off the box there)
Matthew 27:61 says Mariham twice in C, Koridethianus and Sangallensis, among others
Matthew 28:1 says Mariham (just ticking off the box there)

It's highly likely that Matthew would have used Mariham for 8 out of 8 occassions, had the genitive not prevented him from doing so.
And it is blatantly obvious and bloody evident that such is not supposed to be the case, given all the corrections afterwards: it is okay for Luke and John to betray their Coptic roots, but not for Matthew - unless he's explicitly intending to do so?

Back to Mark then, for "more Mariham"

Mark 6:3 is genitive, no variants
Mark 15:40 says Mariham in NA28, usual MSS from above yet Vaticanus joins the party - and it is EXTREMELY INTERESTING how that is only the case for Mary the Magdalene and not for the second Mary: https://digi.vatlib.it/view/MSS_Vat.gr.1209/1444, right column, line 13 from the bottom.
Mark 15:47 says Mariham only in family 1, Syriac tradition and Koridethianus - ON BOTH OCCASSIONS so I guess they didn't get the memo?.
Mark 16:1 has no variants for either Mary
Mark 16:9 says Mariham only in C - which attests to nothing but its will to fake authenticity

That's all folks, have i answered your question now Jagd LOL.
Philip 59 niether has Mariham by the way, just MARIA. Yet it also contains the ⲥⲧⲓⲣⲁ, "the female sterile", which may very well point to the ⲥ⳨ⲟⲥ of Thomas - and that IS in my Commentary (Logion 55)
